Parent's Visit: Batu Caves

We had such a good visit with my parents! They visited the first two weeks of September, and it was perfect timing, because I'm starting to really get anxious to come home - mainly b/c Mandy is due to have her baby in Oct, and I can't wait to meet my little niece!  I was so excited to show them the "town" and also take them on a holiday to Bali.  They arrived on a Saturday afternoon, and were a little wiped out from traveling, so we drove them around KL to see the city, did dinner in the city, then early to bed.

Sunday we went to Batu Caves. The caves are just 15-20 minutes north of the city, and "guarded" by a huge gold statue (a hindu idol). It's really impressive to drive around the corner and see this tall golden statue standing guard at the front of the caves. There are 272 stairs up to the mouth of the caves, and it's a steep climb! Inside the caves are mini alters, and the Hindu people still go to pray, take offerings, light candles, etc..

Monkeys hang from the trees that line the hike up to the caves, waiting for a treat from the tourists... or to snatch something off your backpack that looks like fun to play with. Rule of thumb - let them have it! Tug-of-war with the monkeys never turns out well for tourists :)

I came prepared a big bag of crackers to ensure my parents got a good show on their hike up (yes crackers, monkeys loving bananas are a myth!). And what a show! Large ones, mommies w/babies hanging on their tummies, fast small ones with long tales, etc.. we saw them all!
